“Old people problems”, uncertainty and legitimacy: Challenges with diagnosing Parkinson's disease in Kenya

Very little is known about the experience of people living with Parkinson's disease (PD) in low- and middle-income countries, such as those sub-Saharan Africa. The number specialists region low awareness limited among population healthcare professionals. Drawing on ten months ethnographic fieldwork urban rural Kenya 55 PD (PwP), 23 family members 22 professionals from public private clinics, we set out to understand diagnosis PwP Kenya. diagnostic journeys our study participants were typically long, convoluted confusing. Lack relevant information, combined comorbidities expectations ‘normal’ ageing, often conspired delay interactions health services for many. There followed an extended period uncertainty, misdiagnosis even ‘undiagnosis’, where a decision was reversed. Following diagnosis, patients continued lack information their condition prognosis, making it difficult friends, others what happening them. We suggest that its symptoms needs improve general However, only first step, be accompanied by better access affordable treatment support.
